Aquifers view

Aquifers are used to provide for water influx from rock surrounding the defined reservoir grid.

The master table of the Aquifer view (located in the left pane of the view) lists the aquifers defined for the deck.

Active  Indicates that this aquifer is used for building the deck.

Source  Name of upstream aquifer to which this aquifer row is connected.

Name  Name of the aquifer. Used internally for identification purposes.  Not generated in the deck.

Properties tab

The Properties tab of the Aquifer view is used to determine which part of the grid is connected and which analytical model should be used. Furthermore, water leaking back to the aquifer is controlled and the aquifer properties are set here.

Aquifer connection to grid  Controls the type of connection to the grid. BOUNDARY and BOTTOM leave the selection of grid cells to the simulator. REGION enables cell selection using the Regions tab.

Water influx calculation method  Control the type of analytical model which is used for the calculation.

Allow water leakage back to aquifer  Controls if water is allowed to flow back to the aquifer.

Aquifer properties  Input of aquifer properties which are the thickness, porosity, permeability, radius, angle and ratio between aquifer radius and reservoir radius.

Clicking the Update aquifer button on the Aquifers form updates the function table as well. This function table is created under the assumption of constant terminal rate radial flow for Limited reservoirs. This function depends only on the external / effective radius ratio.

In Appendix G of the GEM™ manual, table 2 shows the values for a fixed number of ratios. The output is created in such a way that the table in the manual can be created exactly. For this ratio the table must match. To change the ratio and be able to create the table, you should edit the aquifer parameter 'Distance'.

Regions tab

The Regions tab of the Aquifer view contains a list of connections to the grid for the currently selected aquifer definition.

I1, I2, J1, J2, K1, K2  Grid block ranges for the aquifer connection, required.

DIR  One of X, Y, Z. Indicates which face of the block the aquifer is connected. Optional. X by default.

Function table tab

The Function table tab is used to define a dimensionless pressure influence function in the case the Carter-Tracy model is used.

Clicking the Update aquifer button (in the Aquifers form) updates the function table as well. This function table is created under the assumption of constant terminal rate radial flow for Limited reservoirs. This function depends only on the external / effective radius ratio.

In Appendix G of the IMEX™ Simulator manual, table 2 shows the values for a fixed number of ratios. The output is created in such a way that the table in the manual can be created exactly. For this ratio the table must match. To change the ratio and be able to create the table, you should edit the aquifer parameter 'Distance'.

Date/Time  Dimensionless time.

Pressure influence function [ratio]  Dimensionless pressure influence function.
